Serial port configuration

How to access Guest’s serial port from host (Virtualbox)

  • Goto VMs Settings -> Serial Ports
  • Port 1
  • Enable Serial Port
  • Port number : COM1  <= This maps to guests’ port
Name Under Windows Name Under Linux IO Address Interrupt Request (IRQ)
COM 1 /dev/ttyS0 0x3F8 4
COM 2 /dev/ttyS1 0x2F8 3
COM 3 /dev/ttyS2 0x3E8 4
COM 4 /dev/ttyS3 0x2E8 3
  • Port Mode : Host Pipe
  • Uncheck “Connect to existing pipe/socket” box
  • Path/Address : \\.\pipe\<anyname>
  • Ok

 

How to configure linux for serial access

There are two modes that can be accessed using serial port

  1. Grub and login [Grub setting is required to enable this]
  2. Login only
To configure serial console access for login :
systemctl enable serial-getty@ttyS0.service    [here ttyS0 for COM1]

 

How to access serial port using Putty

  • Start Putty
  • Select serial mode
  • Serial line : path address [  \\.\pipe\<anyname>  ]
  • Open
  • Press Enter to see login prompt
